NAVIGATION FOR SEA KAYAKERS

Port Stephens, 1-2 June 2019

Navigation: The art of knowing where you are and how to get to your destination in a safe and timely manner.

This is a weekend session that focuses on the above definition in a Sea Kayaking context.  By the end of the session participants will be equipped with the knowledge to more than satisfy the navigational requirements of the Paddle Australia Sea Skills award.

We will be based at the Jimmys Beach Holiday Park, Hawks Nest (on the northern side of Port Stephens).  Participants will need to make their own accommodation arrangements (concessional rates and conditions have been negotiated with the park’s management – details will be advised once you have registered for the event).

There will be a high level of participant involvement throughout (with the bonus of some nice paddling).  Day One is land-based, both theory and lots of hands-on practical exercises (working with compasses, charts and maps, plotting tools, etc) inside and outside the “classroom”.  Day Two will be exclusively on-water (with a shore break for lunch) putting into practise the lessons of the previous day.

So  that we can hit the road running on Day 1 of the session registrants will be provided with some pre-learning materials related to working with compasses and charts and maps.

A cost of $75 (the commercial value of this course would exceed $300) will be required from each participant to cover materials supplied by the Club (such as laminated charts, maps, handouts, Chinagraph pencils, etc) and “classroom” hire.  Participants will be required to bring their own writing materials and a compass (if they have one).  A pocket calculator would be handy.

Kayaks to Grade 2 as a minimum please.

Course presenters include: Russ Swinnerton, Campbell Tiley, Caoimhin Ardren and Adrian Clayton.

Please email Adrian Clayton at gclayton[at]bigpond.com if you have any queries regarding the session.  Otherwise, use the registration facility on the Club’s website to secure your spot (class size limited).
