Navigation For Sea Kayakers

Date 15-16 September 2012

This is a weekend session based at the Jimmys Beach Holiday Park on the northern side of Port Stephens.  There will be a high level of participant involvement throughout (with the bonus of some nice paddling).

The first day will consist mainly of land-based activities, both theory and lots of hands-on practical exercises (working with compasses, charts and maps, etc).  The second day will be exclusively on-water (with a shore break for lunch) putting into practise the lessons of the previous day.

The session will require some pre-attendance learning related to maritime rules

(refer to the Safety section of the 2011-12 edition of NSW Maritime Boating Handbook – see pages 37-40 found on this link: http://www.maritime.nsw.gov.au/docs/sbh/SBH2011_Part4.pdf.).

A cost of $35 will be required from each participant to cover materials supplied by the Club (such as laminated charts, tools, Chinagraph pencils, etc) and “classroom” hire.  Participants will be required to bring their own writing materials and a compass (if they have one).  A pocket calculator would be handy.

By the end of the session participants should be in a position to more than satisfy the navigation requirements of the AC Sea Skills award.

Kayaks to Grade 2 as a minimum please.

See feedback from last year's event.

Adrian Clayton and Stephan Meyn will be your instructors.  Co-presenters will be Russ Swinnerton and Mark Alchin.  Please email Adrian at gclayton[at]bigpond.com
