Darkness in the Bay after work . Again.

Thursday 20th June

All grades with reasonable pace in ‘flat water’

Want to go paddling after work, in the dark?

We will start from Five Dock Bay Boat Ramp and will paddle under some bridges, see the ferry’s light gliding on the water and try to find our way around without hitting any moored boat J

It will be between 10 and 15km on flat water from 8.15/8.30 until 10PM. We will try to keep a good pace to build up fitness and stay warm.

You will need a white, continuous light, all round light, preferably above the height of the deck so it can be seen from many angles and some warm clothes.

Leader for the trip Fernando.

An Introduction to Kayak Control in the Surf Zone

Sydney/Central Coast region

Saturday 17 August 2013

Is your enjoyment of sea kayaking inhibited by anxiety when encountering surf regardless of its size?  The aim of this full-day session is to help you overcome this anxiety and to develop your skills and confidence in the surf.  In other words, we hope to convert any sense of fear you may have in to a sense of fun (balanced, of course) and leave you keen to attend further training sessions in more challenging surf conditions.  The session is regarded as a progression towards readiness for Sea Skill assessment.

The start of the on-water component of this session will be conducted in a non-threatening, gentle surf environment.  Any progression during the session in to larger surf will largely be determined by how you feel, your instructor's assessment and the opportunities presented by the prevailing conditions.

You will be required to wear a helmet during the on-water activities.  If you have one, please bring it along.  Otherwise, loan helmets will be available for the day.  Also, you will be getting wet (intentionally) early in the on-water activities so it would be advisable to bring a second set of paddling clothes along (and some dry clothes to get in to after the session).

Your kayak will need to be presented to the Club's Grade 2 standard.  You will need to present your log book with Grade One requirements signed off.

The venue for the session will be determined in the week leading up to it.  However, it will be no further north than Umina/Ettalong (favoured) and no further south than Wanda Beach.

The instructor to student ratio will be high so places will be limited.

Your instructor will be Adrian Clayton (gclayton[at]bigpond.com).

First whales, first sea experience?

All grades but grade 1 will be given priority. 23/6 9am

A paddle aimed to those with little or no ocean experience.

We will launch from Barrenjoey beach and do a relaxed paddle around to the open ocean. The whales have started their migration to the warmer waters of the north so we may glimpse something if we are lucky. We will head south or north depending on conditions but will not paddle far.

Bring kayaks to grade 2 standard (http://www.nswseakayaker.asn.au/homepage/about-the-club/paddler-grading-system bottom section)
